What are the Benefits of Ankle Sprain Rehab Exercises?
Rehab exercises after an ankle sprain offers a wide range of benefits for your recovery and overall joint health.
Why Ankle Sprain Rehab Exercises Are Important
Reduced Pain and Swelling
- Exercises help improve blood circulation to the injured area. This increased blood flow aids in reducing inflammation and swelling and can speed up the healing process.
Improved Balance and Stability
- Ankle sprains can negatively affect your sense of balance (proprioception). Specific rehab exercises and stretches can help retrain the nerves and muscles around your ankle joint, improving your overall balance and stability.
Prevents Future Injuries
- Strengthening the muscles and ligaments surrounding your ankle joint through exercise can significantly lower your risk of re-spraining your ankle.
Increased Strength and Flexibility
- Ankle sprain rehab exercises involve movements that improve the flexibility of the tendons and ligaments around your ankle. These exercises will also focus on strengthening the muscles that support the ankle, building a stronger and more stable base.
Restored Range of Motion
- Ankle sprains often restrict how well you can move your ankle. Rehab exercises gradually improve your ankle’s range of motion, allowing you to bend and flex it more freely.
Faster Recovery
- Rehab exercises can lead to faster recovery times from ankle sprains compared to simply resting the joint.

5 Ankle Rehab Exercises
1. Calf Stretch
- Stand an arm’s distance from a wall and place your hands on the wall at about shoulder height. Adjust your stance, so one leg is slightly in front of the other. Your toes should be facing forward toward the wall. Lean gently towards the wall until you feel a stretch in your back calf. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat with the opposite leg, and adjust your stance so the back leg is now in front.
2. Towel Stretch
- Sit with your legs extended straight out. Loop a towel around the top of your foot, holding the ends of the towel in your hand. Gently pull the towel toward you until you feel a stretch in your calf. Hold for 30 seconds. Repeat with the other leg.
3. Ankle Circles
- You can do this exercise sitting or standing, sitting is better if you are feeling off balance. Lift one leg off the ground slightly and make small circles with your foot in a clockwise direction, then reverse and make circles counterclockwise. Repeat 10 times in each direction. Then repeat with the other foot.
4. Alphabet Writing
- Sit with your feet flat on the floor. Lift one leg slightly off the ground. “Write” the entire alphabet in the air using just your ankle to guide the rest of your foot.
5. Resistance Band Exercises
- Use a resistance band to perform exercises like ankle dorsiflexion (lifting your foot towards you) and plantar flexion (pointing your foot away from you).
